Modular Knitting with Nicky Barfoot

(includes tea/coffee and day entry to the unravel festival)

with Nicky Barfoot

Learn how to knit on the bias to create the perfect square in garter stitch, and then how to join these squares together to make a beautifully draping fabric. Modular knitting is an easy technique to master and can be used in a variety of knitted projects from scarves, blankets and cushions, to extremely flattering jackets and sweaters.

During this fun, three hour workshop Nicky will teach you how to create a square module using a simple central decrease. With her help, you will begin to work from a printed pattern to knit a striking modular based scarf (which you can take away and continue at home). As you master the technique you will be encouraged to add a contrast yarn (variegated sock yarn works really well) to create an exciting striped effect with the scarf pattern suggesting different ways that the stripes can be spaced to produce different visual interest to each of the modules.

Level / Ability
Suitable for everyone who is able to cast on, cast off and knit.

Participants need
Participants should bring 4 ply yarn in a solid colour (A) and a contrast colour (variegated sock yarn works well) B, and 3 1/4mm knitting needles (30cm or longer). One ball of each will be enough for sampling during the workshop but if attendees wish to build on the sample at home to create the full scarf using the pattern provided, then they will require 100g of yarn A. Also a stitch marker and a pair of scissors for snipping yarn would be useful.
