Stephanie Carswell creates amazing sculptural needle felted animals and curiosities in her studio in Dorset, and we look forward to seeing her creations at festival of crafts. Stephanie uses needle felting techniques, combined with a variety of other craft skills, to craft luxury natural fibres into her stylised and tactile pieces. Each sculpture is exquisitely crafted from sheep fleece and has its own individual characteristics. Stephanie plays with the traditions of taxidermy and the impression of what is real, alongside her observations of the animal world, to exaggerate the noticeable aspects of an animal and turn it into an unique piece of art. These real life observations of animals give Stephanie’s pieces a strong character to connect emotionally with the audience. Stephanie is currently exploring the effects of nature on the felt by leaving it in various environments and then crafting with the result, and is also working on a larger scale than most in this medium to see where she can take felting as an art.
Stephanie lives in a little cottage in Dorset and also runs Hawthorn Handmade website, which sells wool felting supplies and offers practical instruction and guidance. When Stephanie is not busy being an artist and entrepreneur, she likes to enjoy a sneaky pint.
